NAME: Fernando Skinner
BIRTHPLACE: Rio de Janeiro Brazil
AGE: 21
OCCUPATION: Model and Personal trainer

At the tender age of 21, Fernando Skinner has not only travelled the world but lived in many of its major cities. We catch up with the Model, Personal trainer and Instagram star as he talks about his life.

Rio is a dream holiday destination for many, what was it like growing up there?

Living in Rio was not the easiest part of my life. I didn’t come from a fancy family or place, so there were all the challenges that come with that kind of setup. In truth though, like anything that makes you stronger, it helped me to build who I am today. I fight and don’t give up. I’ve got no real complaints about Rio. I love my city and after a few years now of travelling the world, I can still say it’s the No1 city in the world for me.

So where have you lived on your travels?

Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, HK, Macau, China & Cambodia. Currently, Shanghai is where I would call ‘home’.

How did you get into modelling?

I was kind of skinny and didn’t feel good about myself, but randomly one day I got an offer to be a model. Since that day I felt that’s what I’d like to do. I love the diversity of the jobs and working with new people.

From that day, I discovered my passion and started to improve myself. Study fashion, photography and find out my other love, the gym.

How did you get into personal training?

After one year traveling as a model, I had the opportunity to work for a great company in a 5-star hotel as a PT and live in Dubai for a year.

How long did it take you to build the body that you have?

In total, I’ve been working out since I was 16, but to reach the best condition usually takes me 5-6 months with a strict regime.

What tips would you give people who are trying to build a good body?

It’s really simple… diet and training. And sticking to that. You are the owner of your body. If you don’t fight for what you want, nobody is going to do that for you. So take the first step, and go to the gym and don’t give up. You will see the results, but not if you quit after a month. Many people get to a dead end because they just don’t stick with the plan.

What new fitness trends do you think are good practice?

I believe in the basics, no gimmicks, but one thing I would promote is the popularity of social media. I get to see different exercises and techniques every day just by glancing through peoples Instagram feeds. I still prefer to focus on new techniques based on real research and not the impressive move that looks great for the thousands of followers.

What have been your biggest challenges in life?

Quitting the comfort zones, missing the comfort of home, family, and friends. Travelling to the Philippines alone to pursue my dream to become top at 21 is tough!

What was the best decision you made?

It’s the same as my biggest challenge. Face the fear.

You are a big star on Instagram, what advice would you give users to get a following like yours?

Instagram is not as easy as people imagine. That’s part of my job. Be active, always try to update content for your followers regularly. Do your best in the pics, (nobody wants to see a bad pic). And again, don’t give up, it takes time to build a strong social media presence.

And what are your plans for the future?

Next year I will try different markets in Europe and USA. That’s going to be a big step and I’m excited for the new experiences. Now I’m trying to focus more on my model career but I’m open to life, you never know what door is just about to open. When chance comes knocking, the best thing you can hope to be is prepared.
